6 QUICK TIPS FOR PREPPING YOUR AIR CONDITIONING FOR SUMMER

As the calendar turns over to summer, many of us turn on our air conditioning units for the first time in months. While prepping your air conditioning unit is an essential part of getting ready for summer, homeowners often overlook it. Below, you’ll find six simple tips to help you make sure your air conditioning unit is operating as efficiently as possible.

CHECK THE THERMOSTAT

The first thing most people do when they get home from work is set the thermostat to their preferred temperature. Many of us don’t give our thermostats much thought, but it’s essential to check them regularly and ensure they are working correctly. If your system is set too low, it could cause your air conditioning to overwork itself, resulting in a clogged filter and higher energy bills.

CLEAN THE EVAPORATOR AND CONDENSER COILS

Your air-con works like a refrigerator, and the coils are vital to its operation. The evaporator coil is located inside your home, and it picks up heat from the air. The condenser coil is on the outside of your home, and it releases that heat outside. If these coils get dirty or clogged, your air-con will have to work harder. This lowers its efficiency, shortens its lifespan, and raises your energy bills. You can clean these coils with a vacuum cleaner or a hose; this should be done at least once a year.

CHANGE THE FILTER

Changing the filter involves removing it from its housing and replacing it with a new one. If you’re changing a multi-stage system, such as a heat pump or high-efficiency unit, the filter is usually located in a separate box with two or three filters. The easiest way to determine which type of filter you need is to look at the box and see what kind of housing it uses. If you’re unsure what type is in your unit, it’s easy to find out this information by contacting your service provider.

CLEAN THE OUTDOOR UNIT

The outdoor unit is exposed to dirt, debris, and grime. It also gets clogged with grass and plants that grow around it. All this dirt and debris can be harmful to your air-con’s performance. It also shortens its lifespan.

So, you should clean the outdoor unit periodically to remove all the dirt from it. Start by getting rid of all the debris from the outside of the unit. Then clean the inside of the unit with a wet vac or a hose. Finally, get rid of any weeds and plants growing around it.

CHECK REFRIGERANT LEVELS

It’s vital to check refrigerant levels so that your air conditioning system doesn’t have to work harder than necessary. You should have this service performed every year or if you notice that your home isn’t getting cool enough, even when the air conditioner is running.

HAVE YOUR AIR-CON SYSTEM SERVICED BY A PROFESSIONAL

The best thing you can do for your air-con system is have it serviced by a professional from DACS Air Conditioning before the weather gets hot. If you’ve been putting off repairs because of the cost, keep in mind that the wear and tear on a poorly maintained air-con system can cause it to break down sooner than an adequately maintained one.
